About 29,754 students have qualified for loans in the academic year 2013/2014, the Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) has announced.

Cosmas Mwaisobwa, the board’s Director of Communication, Information and Education said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the number of successful applicants stood at 94.04 per cent, against earlier projection of  31,647 students.

“For the academic year 2013/2014, the government allocated Sh306bn for loans to students,” he said, noting that qualifying students are new beneficiaries while about 61,692 continue with studies at different stages. Loans to be issued amount to about Sh325bn, he said.

“The entire process of loan allocations has already been completed by 90 per cent and by the first week of October everything will be ready,” he emphasized.

Students qualifying for loans in the 2013/2014 academic year will have their names placed on the board’s websiten at http://www.heslb.go.tz/, he said.

Of about 53,239 new applicants and 43,032 applicants with admission, there were 6,364 applicants whose applications had problems and another 3,151 applicants who corrected their problems while 3,213 did not succeed to iron out those discrepancies,, the director noted.

“Of the new applicants 53,239 were local undergraduates, 156 local postgraduates, 51 overseas postgraduates and 184 overseas undergraduates,” he said.

Those with admissions at hand are 60,577 local undergraduates, 699 local postgraduates, 118 overseas postgraduates and 298 overseas undergraduates, he further stated, informing students qualified for loans that procedures to transfer the funds to the colleges/universities admitting them were being pursued.

HESLB was established in 2004 and started operations in 2005 to release loans for students with admission  in higher education and recovering loans released since 1994/1995.
